Corporations break ground in St. Louis, Cleveland

Talk about this story

All Trung Canidate and Dennis Northcutt need now is a shovel and a hard hat as they break ground in the next stage of their careers.

They just had a dream come true by being drafted in the NFL, but more importantly, the two go to teams that could use their services.

Northcutt will be used more than Canidate, but learning under the best is not that bad.

Canidate was the 31st pick in this weekend's draft and is headed to the St. Louis Rams...that is the Super Bowl Champion St. Louis Rams.

This is good for Trung in more ways than one.

Besides not having to wear those old hideous Rams uniforms (they now have new slick gear that was displayed by Joe Theisman during the draft), he gets to play behind Marshall Faulk.

Faulk, one of the best all-around backs in the league is similar to Canidate in that they are both fast - Canidate may be the faster of the two - and they each can catch the ball out of the backfield, but Faulk holds the candle there. Both of them can also hit a hole hard and find the seam to take it the distance.

Canidate will be able to learn under the tutelage of Faulk and the offensive genius of Mike Martz, the new head coach.

Martz was here in Tucson watching Canidate's workout, and was extremely impressed with the speed the young running back possesses. Who wouldn't be - he ran a 4.26 40-yard dash.

The Rams got a steal in Canidate in that he is a running back, that when healthy, can spell Faulk at any time during the game, while also adding some kick or punt returning ability.

The man is fast, and the NFL is about to find that out.

ESPN went to a commercial break after Canidate was picked and when they came back, former UA receiver Dennis Northcutt's name was immediately called at No. 32.

The situation could not be more perfect for Northcutt. He is a solid receiver going to a young team that is looking to build through the draft.

Northcutt teams up with two of the fastest rising stars in the NFL in Kevin Johnson and Tim Couch, which makes for an extremely young and talented battery for the Dogpound.

Northcutt will be able to start immediately for Chris Palmer's Browns and will also be given the opportunity to return punts and kicks. He has some of the best moves of any player drafted, which makes him one of the most unlikely targets to get laid out by any secondary player, namely former UA teammate Chris McAlister who will see Dennis twice a year, when the Browns and Ravens collide.

He is a poor man's Peter Warrick, but he will prove that he can play in the league.

Canidate and Northcutt are now in situations where they can only improve. Faulk will help Trung build his corporation in St. Louis and Northcutt will be given every opportunity to bring a winning brand of offensive football back to Cleveland.

The draft may have been boring for the general public, but the excitement begins on Sept. 3 when Northcutt and Canidate don their new NFL gear.
