Volunteer opportunities available

By Cheryl Y. Toy

To the editor:

In response to David J. Cieslak's "Put a little love in your heart," which was run on September 8, I would like to say that I certainly agree with Mr. Cieslak's positive opinion on helping others. Mr. Cieslak ought to be respected and admired for his time and effort put into helping children of inner-city schools. However, Mr. Cieslak is human, like the rest of us, and his accomplishments may easily be repeated by others. UA supports a community service club called Circle K International. We offer many opportunities to help others, such as preparing supper at Ronald McDonald House for parents whose children are hospitalized, collecting abandoned clothing from the Rec Center to give to charity, playing volleyball with Special Olympics, packing various supplies to send to Turkey and hosting a Halloween party a local domestic violence shelter. Last weekend, in cooperation with World Care, we boxed everything from clothes to catheters to send off to Turkey. After we were finished, I was glad to have spent my afternoon preparing things that would help someone else who was suffering. It was nice to leave myself, along with that cloud of assignments, deadlines and worries behind just for a few hours to help people in need.

Perhaps you are busy, and this week and the next are no good for you to spare even a minute. Perhaps you would like to apply for a scholarship which requires community service. Perhaps you have a little extra time a month from now. Even just 15 minutes of volunteer time is an improvement on 0. Whatever your reason, please join Circle K International on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Tucson Room of the Student Union.
