Women go for 6th straight tournament at Pac-10 Championship
The top-ranked Arizona women's golf team - which has set a school record by winning five consecutive tournaments - will try to shatter its own record this week at the Pacific 10 Conference championships, held at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. "We are very confident and it would be hard not to be with the success we have had this spring," UA head coach Todd McCorkle said. All-American senior Jenna Daniels, who is the No. 1 player in the nation, believes with the team's talent, they have a very strong shot at winning the conference title. "I think we are a pretty special team in that not everyone can be playing their best to win," Daniels said. "It's a really good feeling going into the tournament knowing that we all don't need to be on our game to win." Senior All-American Christina Monteiro said the team will be very focused today as the tournament begins, because they want to keep their win streak intact. "When you have a streak like this, you almost don't want it to stop," Monteiro said. The Pac-10 is one of the strongest conferences in the nation for women's golf, though, as seven of the top-25 teams in the nation are in the conference - including No. 1 Arizona, No. 3 Southern California and No. 4 Arizona State. "Any given team can win on any given day," McCorkle said. Individually, the Wildcats are loaded with weapons, as three of the five starters are ranked in the top-15 in the nation. Daniels, who is coming off a victory in her last tournament - the ASU/Ping Invitational - is expected to challenge for the top spot in the conference. "Jenna has played so well and I know she will play well," McCorkle said. "I feel she steps it up every tournament. She would love nothing more than herself and our team to come out on top." "We don't want to keep winning because of the streak, but rather because we are very competitive and we love the feeling of victory," Daniels said. Another advantage for the UA will be All-American senior Jill Gomric - who has been suffering a wrist injury as of late - is ready to go full speed for Pac-10 championship. "I am 100 percent better and it's not effecting me at all," Gomric said of her injury. McCorkle said a key to the success of the team will be the play of freshmen Julia Kraschinski, who has been playing strong as of late. "Julia has the ability to shoot low scores," McCorkle said. "She is very vital to our success."
