Blau, Gough go 4-0 in conference tournament to claim

Sophomore Lindsay Blau and junior Michelle Gough fought their way through tough Pac-10 competition during the weekend to capture the conference's doubles title.

Blau and Gough defeated Southern California's Tiffany Bryner and Kara Warkentin 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in Oija, Calif., for the championship.

Before yesterday's deciscive match, the two doubles teams had met twice earlier in regular season play - Jan. 29 in Tucson and March 10 in Los Angeles. They split the matches, with each team winning on the other's home court.

Throughout the tournament, the twosome oscillated between blow outs and close matches. Beginning the tournament, the women defeated Washington's Iiona Kordonskaya and Zeta Wagner, 8-2.

The duo reached Saturday's semifinals after a nail-biting 9-8 victory against California's Caroline Borgensen and Amy Jensen. In the match, the UA doubles team won the tie-breaking set 7-5.

Blau and Gough easily defeated Elizabeth Schmidt and Abigail Spears from UCLA, 6-4, 6-3.

This is the second time the pair reached the doubles finals in a tournament this year. On Feb. 5, Blau and Gough were defeated in the finals at the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Champions in Houston.

In other action for Arizona, freshman Uzma Kahn won her first round match against Alina Wygonowska 6-0, 7-6. On Friday, though, she fell to Arizona State's Allison Bradshaw 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the second round.

Blau lost her first singles match to USC's Jacqui Boyd 6-2, 6-2, while Gough met the same fate in singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to USC's Jewel Peterson.

Blau and Gough were traveling back to Tucson at press time and could not be reached for comment.
