Talk about this story

Dorothy Johnson Langen, wife of former UA professor Herbert J. Langen and a life member of the UA Faculty Wives Club, died Friday after a long battle with cancer. She was 83.

Langen was a graduate of Carleton College and completed her graduate degree at the University of Iowa.

Her husband stated, "One of Dorothy's most significant contributions to the UA was her dedication and support of the International Students' Wives program, founded by the late George Harvill, wife of former UA President Richard Harvill."

Mildred Holesapple, a long-time family friend who had Herbert Langen as a professor, said Dorothy was a "wonderfully vibrant person."

"She had a wonderful bounce-back quality that was truly appreciated by all who knew and loved her," Holesapple said. "I was just awed at the tremendous battle she made against cancer."

Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 915 E. Fourth St., where the Langens were long-time members and volunteers.

In addition to her husband, Dorothy is survived by a son, William Langen, of Tucson; daughter Nancy Langen Shoninger of Sonoma, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
