Arts need more coverage

By Shaun Clayton
Arizona Daily Wildcat,

To the editor,

I would like to complain. Namely, I would like to complain about the fact that ads for "hot" dance clubs, and "hip" bars get more space than the arts section.

I remember a time when the arts section got it's own magazine, called the Catalyst. It was informative, was broad in scope, and it really gave a chance for otherwise unknown artists around town a chance to be recognized.

Why is it that now that a Daffy Duck postage stamp gets more space than the Arts section, and is more informative?

Is it because there isn't enough material to write on the arts in Tucson?

Not likely. A brief stroll through downtown Tucson can easily show you enough arts material to fill up a powerbook or two. I think that perhaps the Wildcat, and a lot of the people around this University, feel that the arts just aren't important enough to warrant more attention. That's pretty sad.

The arts aren't just some guy enveloping himself in shrink wrap, throwing himself in a tub of rancid mayonnaise and calling it "The Pain of a Subway Sandwich;" it's music, like Jimi Hendrix making a guitar wail like a freed banshee. It's Homer Simpson opening a can of neapolitan ice cream, chanting, "Mmmm ... chocolate," then screaming, "D'oh!" when he finds that the chocolate side has been eaten. It's George Carlin telling us "at the airport they say 'it is now time to get on the plane.' Screw that, I'm getting IN the plane!"

It's things that help define this country, to give people a way to express themselves, to make this place still seem cool when everything about it is going downhill! If THAT isn't reason enough to give the Arts more attention, I don't know what is.
