UA has $1.8 billion impact, report says
[news] The UA contributes $1.86 billion annually to Pima County's economy, according to a study released yesterday, but officials say that number may not reflect all benefits the school gives to the community. "Educational institutions provide the primary mechanism for upward mobility," University of Arizona President Peter Likins told about 200 members of the Tucson business community yesterday.

Athletes & their lives beyond games and practices

The majority of athletes are serious students, though there will always be a few Mike Bibbys who come to UA merely to improve their game and move on to the professional ranks. Still, most students hold athletics in high regards, proving the environment that caused the Princeton Review to name UA the No. 1 jock school in the country does exist.

What a wonderful world
[news] I am continually impressed by the goodness of humanity. Turn on the news, and you'll hear stories about school crossing guards dying to protect a child from a speeding car. Volunteers comfort terminally ill people as they take their last gasps of air and children help the elderly who struggle through life in nursing homes. Sometimes, being alive is enjoyable and being a member of society is a perk. Other times, however, people can be so despicable and morally corrupt that I wonder about this so-called society we live in.

Not every Billboard chart-topping band takes time out of their busy schedules of recording and touring to perform for 150 people at a bar mitzvah. But when an 11-year-old fan named Mitchell wrote to the band and asked them to play at his upcoming bar mitzvah, the band agreed.
