UA and ASU set to duke it out at University Fight Night

By Keith Carmona
Arizona Daily Wildcat, October 1, 1999

While UA and Arizona State students are quick to verbally bash one another throughout the year, they will get the opportunity to legally physically assault each other tonight at University Fight Night.

The event, which is in its fourth year will be held at Maloney's Tavern, 213 N. 4th Ave., at 7 p.m. and will feature about 20 fights - six of which will feature female boxers - that will pit Sun Devils against Wildcats.

"The majority of the fighters are first-timers and will likely just be out there to have fun," Fight Night coordinator Lawrence Lentz said. "The fighting will probably be very sloppy, as they will be coming out swinging hard."

Lentz said that even though the boxers' skills will not be very refined, the street fighting tactics at Fight Night will be much more entertaining for the spectators.

"Our goal is just to have good, solid fights - none that will be lopsided," Lentz said. "It is just a fun event for students to get an introduction to boxing and fans to have a great time."

The rules of the fight will be standard USA Amateur Boxing rules. Each fight is scheduled for three-one minute rounds with one minute rests between each round.

Points will be calculated for the number of punches thrown and landed in each round, Lentz said.

Each of the past four years, Fraternity Fight Night has drawn around 2,000 fans, but Lentz said that he expects nearly 4,000 this year due to more aggressive marketing strategies.

"We close the parking lot of Maloney's and let the crowd go nuts for the UA and ASU boxers duking it out," Lentz said. "I will guarantee that people will have so much fun that if they aren't enjoying themselves by the fifth fight, I will give them their money back.

"This may be the best fun UA students have ever had."

Tickets are available at Ticketmaster for $10, $15 or $50.
