McGrath not representative of Glendale

By Warren Thiptus
Arizona Daily Wildcat,
October 6, 1999

To the editor,

In response to yesterday's editorial regarding Rep. Jean McGrath, I would like to apologize, on behalf of the "sane" representatives of Glendale, for any past/present/future remarks that Rep. McGrath may utter.

These do not represent any of the views of the majority of the citizens of Glendale. The editorial inquires as to why voters of Glendale keep voting for Rep. McGrath.

This is a quite a rather simple reasoning. The voting population of Glendale is a rather affluent species. These rather affluent (and by affluent, I do NOT mean upper-middle class or middle class for that matter) citizens have nothing better to do than to watch the 700 Club and listen to Rush Limbaugh.

Therefore, these are the citizens who actually have the time and money to vote. The majority of Glendale's citizens basically cannot afford to ditch work for the few hours that the polls are open to actually go out and vote. Or, for that matter, actually research on who to actually vote for.

Please note that the 700 Club is not a form of definite candidate research.

On the other hand, maybe the election of Rep. McGrath shows a flaw in the system. In Europe election day is a national holiday, therefore since everyone is off of work and has nothing better to do, one might get the chance to go out and work. Is it really Glendale's fault for the spewing McGrath-isms or is it the system's?
