Italiafest showcases culture, cuisine at north Tucson church

University of Arizona students can get a big taste of little Italy starting tomorrow, as the fourth annual Italiafest brings classic entrees and a slice of Italian traditions to Tucson.

Associate professor Ronnie Terpening, who coordinates the UA's Italian Studies, said many students are not aware of the way that Italian culture - both ancient and modern - has influenced American life.

"Several cultural institutions dealing with law can be traced back to Italy," Terpening said.

Also, the origins of radio and television are rooted in Italy with inventors such as Guglielmo Marconi.

No radio is required, however, to hear Tony and the Sicilian Band - who have played at festivals like this throughout the Southwest - provide a sampling of Italian songs. The band will also play some of its own original songs so festival-goers can dance to their heart's content on the grounds of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 8650 N. Shannon Road, where the festival is being held.

The festival will also feature a pie-eating contest, demonstrations by the Pima County Sheriff's Office, Rural Metro Fire and backyard barbecue favorites like hot dogs and hamburgers.

Raffle prizes will be given out every 15 minutes, leading up to the grand prize drawing for $2,000. Proceeds from the events will benefit community charities.
