UAPD shouldn't defend Bible Jim's 'rights'
To the editor, The other day I was walking on campus and had the displeasure of hearing Bible Jim speak. I observed the UAPD arrive and silently cheered, thinking, perhaps, they were going to remove him from school property. To my disbelief, instead they were there to defend Bible Jim's "rights." It seems unfair on a private campus we have to listen to such extreme Christian fundamentalists spew hatred. Pretty much everyone, including "homosexuals," "rebellious women," even "Presbyterians" are going to hell, according to Bible Jim. No one on campus likes to hear Bible Jim, and 99.9 percent of his audience is there to heckle him. He is a menace on the verge of inciting riots here on campus. What kind of image are we presenting of the University of Arizona to people of other races and cultures, not to mention thousands of foreign students who attend school here when we allow this kind of blatant "hate" speech to go on? This is a private campus and some standards of conduct should apply. The reason "Bible Jim" doesn't do his preaching elsewhere is because he is so offensive that he would get attacked in a heartbeat.
