Cal defense befuddles the Bruins

By Brian Wahlund
Arizona Daily Wildcat, October 19, 1999

The California Golden Bears shutout the UCLA Bruins 17-0 on Saturday to move to 2-1 in the conference and a tie for second-place with Arizona, Washington and Arizona State.

UCLA entered the game averaging 31 points-per-game, but could only muster 12 first downs and 168 yards in total offense against the Bears.

UCLA quarterback Cory Paus was held to 81 yards passing and was the team's leading rusher with 67 yards on 11 carries.

Bears running back Joe Igber turned in his second straight 100-yard performance with 113 yards on 20 carries.

Cal's defensive performance in Pasadena against UCLA did not go unnoticed, as senior linebacker Sekou Sanyika was named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week.

Sanyika recorded four tackles for a loss (for a total of -20 yards) and two sacks. He totaled six tackles on the afternoon as the Cal defense suffocated UCLA's offense. The Bruins were only 3-for-14 on third down conversion attempts.

Cal's punter, junior Nick Harris was named the Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week after he averaged 53.1 yards on seven punts, including boots of 60 and 68 yards. Harris leads the conference in punting with a 48.0-yard average.

Arizona's senior running back Trung Canidate rounded out the players of the week as he garnered the offensive award, rushing for 202 yards on 27 carries, including a 60-yard burst for a touchdown. It was Canidate's fifth straight 100-yard game as the Wildcats defeated UTEP 34-21.

Stanford continued their undefeated streak in conference play by beating Oregon State 21-17 on Saturday.

Stanford's four game conference win-streak is the longest the Cardinal has had since 1970, when they opened the season with four Pac-10 wins.

Both Stanford and Oregon State entered the game with offenses ranked in the top five nationally. Stanford entered the game averaging 40.4 points-per-game and the Beavers went to Palo Alto averaging 34.4 points-per-game.

Cardinal quarterback Todd Husak was back in action after sitting out the past two games with bruised ribs.

OSU tailback Ken Simonton, the nation's third leading rusher, racked up 115 yards against the Cardinal, but that wasn't enough as the Beavers turned the ball over three times in the game. They have committed 14 turnovers in the last three games.

Arizona State recovered six Washington fumbles and held the Huskies to their lowest point total since 1983 in a 28-7 road win.

The Sun Devil defense came into the game giving up 25.7 points-per-game, but allowed the Huskies only one touchdown in this contest.

The ASU defense allowed a Washington touchdown on their first drive of the game but shut down the Husky option after the score and didn't allow another point.

Sun Devil quarterback Ryan Kealy completed 15-of-28 passes for 194 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The ASU offensive line has done their part to help quarterback Ryan Kealy recover from injuries. Kealy hasn't been sacked in the past two games.

Notre Dame scored 22 unanswered points and held the USC Trojans to only a field goal in the second half during the Irish's 25-24 win Saturday.

The Trojans scored on three of their first four possessions before being shut down in the second half. USC again had a rough day running the ball as they only posted 113 total rushing yards, and managed just 21 yards in the second half.

The loss marks the first two-game losing streak of Paul Hackett's tenure at USC and also snaps the Trojans three-game winning streak against Notre Dame.
