UA, Colorado College ends in tie

By Chris Martin
Arizona Daily Wildcat, October 25, 1999 Talk about this story

In a game dominated by defense, the UA women's soccer team and Colorado College went through the regulation period and two sudden death overtimes without being able to find the back of the net in a 0-0 tie.

The Wildcats (6-8-1 overall) outshot the Tigers 20-8, but were not able to slip a shot past Colorado freshman goalkeeper Kristin Masunaga.

"I don't know what the shot ratio, was but it wasn't that defensive," UA head coach Lisa Fraser said. "We just didn't put it in the net, but we did a good job of defending the net today."

Juniors Ann Giallonardo and Brooke McManus anchored a UA defense that allowed only two shots on goal and shut down the Tigers (8-5-2 overall) offensively.

"I thought we were all on the same page," sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Monti said of the Wildcats defensive effort.

Monti made two saves in recording her second shut out of the season.

"Communication was a lot better from the back, from Shannon," sophomore midfielder Marisa Padula said. "She did awesome."

Junior forward Chrissy Sanford was also pleased with the improved communication amongst the team, but said it is "not where I want it to be, but it's getting there."

Sanford, despite a pulled hamstring, lead the way offensively for the Wildcats with four shots, one that hit the top of the crossbar.

Sophomore forward Kim McGehee and McManus contributed with three shots a piece.

"It was a good battle, we battled to the end and played with a lot of heart," Sanford said. "I am proud of us for going the whole 120-minutes without getting a goal scored on us."
