Players innocent until proven guilty

By Dave Nagel
Arizona Daily Wildcat,
August 27, 1999

To the Editor,

I couldn't stand by and read the comments by Eric and Kirsteen Anderson.

You have chosen to try, convict and punish these young men for something you read about in the Daily Wildcat. While I do agree with you that if these young men did what they are alleged to have done, there should be punishment for their actions. The fact of the matter is, they haven't been convicted of anything.

Maybe I should give you a civics lesson that you have seem to have forgotten. In this country, you are innocent until proven guilty. And that means proven in a court of law, not the court of public opinion or in the media.

You have every right in the world to your opinion, that is protected by law here. But you feel that because these men are football players they do not have the same rights as you do. I suggest to you Mr Anderson, stop looking at the stars and use that huge telescope to view the Bill of Rights.

And to you Ms Anderson, I give you an "F" on the handling of this case. And I surely hope that if any of your students turned in a paper that doesn't weigh both sides of the story to give them the same grade as I have given you.

This university is lucky to have a man of Coach Tomey's character and integrity coaching some of it's student-athletes. He realizes that he doesn't have a J.D. or a seat on the Pima County Circuit Court Bench. I have no doubts that the right thing will be done if and when that time arises.
