UAPD Chief of Police Harry Hueston announced Friday he will resign effective June 30, according to a police statement.

Hueston began his tenure with the University of Arizona Police Department in 1985 when he was hired as an assistant police chief. He became chief of police in 1997.

Hueston stated in the release that he gave the department eight months notice to ensure they had ample time to find a replacement.

"I wanted to make this announcement in fair advance in order to provide time for a thoughtful search and smooth transition to new leadership," he stated.

Hueston said in the release that he is looking to seek an opportunity to combine his academic and practical experiences in a new career. He declined further comment about his future when contacted yesterday afternoon.

UA President Peter Likins stated in the release that he has a deep respect for Hueston.

"Harry Hueston has a unique sense of how policing on a college campus is different from more traditional police roles," Likins stated.

Likins also praised Hueston's professionalism during last semester's Students Against Sweatshop sit-in in his office.

"The UAPD provided round-the-clock security without ever taking an action that might have provoked a confrontation," Likins stated.
