Hand controls useless

Talk about this story

To the editor,

After reading the article in the Daily Wildcat about the OCR decision to force the University of Arizona to obtain vehicles to assist students with disabilities in their transportation needs, I am very disappointed with the UA Motor Pool reaction to this ruling. The comment that states UA is in compliance because they have hand controls that can be transferred from vehicle to vehicle is ridiculous. What good are hand controls to someone who requires a lift to enter a vehicle. What good are hand controls to a student athlete competing in a wheelchair event and needing transportation? Additionally, this department needs some serious sensitivity and disability awareness training.

These vehicles should be housed at CeDRR to insure that they are used to transport students/staff/faculty to appropriate disability related activities. In the past the wheelchair van was used to transport lab equipment, archaeological dig equipment and other non-disability related uses.
