UA literary magazine looking for submissions
It began about 15 years ago. A group of University of Arizona students decided that any magazine associated with the output of undergraduate creative work should be edited and constructed by undergraduates themselves. With the help of funding from a few colleges and deans, Persona was born. This month, Persona, the undergraduate literary arts magazine for the UA, begins its call for submissions for the 2000 issue due out next May. The magazine, which showcases student art and creative writing, is distributed by the English department and edited by undergraduate students. Along with the poetry, fiction and art submissions, this year's magazine is also calling for film still submissions. The stills featured in the magazine will be a preview for the "Persona Reading" taking place next spring when -Řalong with the standard readings - the films will be screened. "We're very eager to get people to submit," said Margaret Adcock, a creative writing and English junior who submitted last year and who is one of this year's co-editors. "I like the idea of the magazine because it is all undergraduate work. The students have all the control, which is a lot of fun." The student editors work with a budget supported by grants from various departments and deans and from the proceeds of previous issues. "My interest in the magazine was sparked because I knew people who were featured in it," said Kelly Rife, an English and creative writing senior and co-editor of this year's edition. Rife, who worked on a former Tucson magazine called Prose Kitchen, was drawn to the idea of featuring local poets and artists. "Persona gives us the opportunity to feature our community," Rife said.
