We don't live in an ideal world

By Meghan D. Saar

To the editor:

Hypocrisy arises when Lora J. Machel states (in "Cold Truth About Guns, Friday's Wildcat): "Each of us must make our personal choice about guns."

Her very next sentence goes on to tell us what our personal choice should be by saying: "We must not buy guns or embrace violence," as if it our choice is up to her. That doesn't sound too personal to me.

It sounds like she views her opinion as the supreme above all others. I do agree that Lora makes a good point about the governmental restrictions that are in effect now as not being anywhere near solving the problem. But she thinks that the nation as a whole should do "something" about it because legislation is just not going to work.

You have the big NRA dogs with more money against the poorer gun control advocates. So, of course, because money seems to affect Congress' decision, we should just do away with small group legislation attempts. She misses the point entirely, even though she does mention parts of it throughout her article.

The problem isn't just that the people who are attempting to legislate gun control don't have enough money or a big strong organization behind them, it's that they aren't trying to legislate it in the most effective way. Lora herself mentions that placing guns on a mandatory waiting period doesn't really solve the problem, yet she never ties mention of this to the end of her article.

I still think the best thing I read in this piece is Lora's declaration that "If we want a peaceful future, we as a nation must first choose to live without guns."

It's as simple as that. Problem solved. I forgot we lived in the ideal world.
