'Claire's Knee' revisits 'Lolita,' with a twist

Talk about this story

The International Arts Society will screen the French film, "Claire's Knee" tonight in the continuation of its International Arts Society Film Series. This 1970 film, the fifth of Eric Rohmer's "Six Moral Tales," takes a sly, humorous look at a middle-aged man's infatuation with a beautiful but naive teen-ager.

When a diplomat is on vacation in the beautiful countryside without his fiancee, he is introduced to two teen-age girls by an old friend. Although he insists he has put all of his romantic feelings behind him, the two girls prove the object of his developing obsession.

This subtly erotic film weaves a complex web of impulse, restraint and self deception as the diplomat, Jerome, must decide if his desire for Claire is aesthetic or purely carnal.
