Homosexuals making progress

Talk about this story

To the editor,

The fact is, the church is not fighting a losing battle (see Nick Zeckets' commentary in the Nov. 22 edition of the Wildcat). Several churches have accepted practicing homosexuals into their membership and into their clergy.

Really, this reprehensible fundamentalist battle against minority groups keeps being waged by people who have never actually studied the Bible. As most people who study language will tell you, words are slippery things. The Bible can be used to prove anything! Some people still use the Bible to "prove" that slavery is fine in God's eyes. And anything that claims the authority of God in this way is dangerous. God didn't write the Bible; people did - real, historical people. There are real, historical contradictions and inaccuracies in the Bible. Books of the Bible were written in response to historical, political problems.

The Bible is not the word of God. "Bible study" should not consist of simply nodding one's head in agreement with the leader of the chosen church. In fact, when you begin to take up real biblical scholarship, it is not so hard to understand why most people who really study the Bible don't believe in God. Especially when the people who do believe in God act the way they do.
