Enlightened society wouldn't discriminate against beliefs
To the editor, I am writing in regards to Mr. Velasco's letter in Tuesday's edition of the Wildcat. Mr. Velasco defends the church for defrocking a minister for conducting a homosexual marriage on the grounds that "laws are written by God, not man." To begin with, the actual letter of the law says that anyone having homosexual relations should be put to death. Further, laws require that no one eat pork or shellfish. I have to wonder if Mr. Velasco supports execution of homosexuals, or even keeps kosher, as the law seems to require. After all, these laws were written by God, not man. Second, not being a Christian or a homosexual, it seems that I have no right to even be writing about this. The truth is, I don't want to let my personal religious or philosophical beliefs affect anyone else's lifestyle. I don't have the right to condemn anyone for conducting a homosexual marriage, and neither does the Church, if one of their ordained ministers, raised and trained in the faith, sees it fit to conduct a homosexual marriage. I think that our society should be more enlightened and accepting than to cause someone to lose their job over what they believe. Joseph P. Marotta Astronomy and physics sophomore
