Christian ministers, student volunteers unfairly represented

By Andrew Winslow
Arizona Daily Wildcat,
August 31, 1999

To the editor,

Armstrong's argument is that the Wildcats for Christ and Faith Christian Church ministers are raising money through church donations. So in essence, every time that one of the ministers talks to ( I'm sorry, "pounces") a student they are ultimately trying to raise the monetary value of their paycheck.

That's a fantastic Marxist analysis of the situation Mr. Armstrong, but in this case it is just not going to fit the data. The fact is, no minister that works for Faith Christian Church as a Campus Evangelist gets paid by the Church.

All of the Campus Evangelists take several months a year to raise support from the local community, friends, neighbors and concerned citizens of Tucson in order to finance their ministry at the university. These ministers never see a dime of the money that is given to Faith Christian Church freely by donation.

Furthermore, the rest of their assistance comes from student volunteers.

Every Bible study, barbecue and party that the WFC and FCC host are all paid out of the pockets of the ministers and students.

To ease your concerns about the church donations, one portion goes to the three full-time pastors, and the rest goes to alms, building funds, foreign missions or any other specified charity.

I stress once again that the Church does not pay the Campus Evangelists. Their paychecks are freely given to them by monthly donations of their support teams.

I am personally sorry that you felt hassled by a campus minister and that you became sort of bitter from the experience. But it is important to always put the facts of the issue in front of your personal feelings.

The facts are: the Faith Christian Church Ministers and Wildcats for Christ volunteers are not working on any kind of commission because they do not get paid for the people that they bring in.

The fact is, a bible study is no different from any other class at the university, you can either take it or leave it. Fact is, students who want to take the class don't know where to enroll. Ministers aren't trying to "sell" God, just teach the truth and information brought into their lives.

As a journalist, you should be ashamed at the broad inaccuracies in your commentary. First find out all the facts, and then draw the conclusion.
