Winter wonderland

One semester down the drain and many students are left feeling slightly ragged around the edges. There's no better way to recuperate over the holiday break than to get a taste of a little local flavor. The following is a comprehensive list of galleries and performances opening around Tucson:

Holiday Book Signings

Still having problems finding that perfect gift? Make time to visit the Arizona Historical Society's 24th Annual Holiday Book Fair this Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Approximately 24 local authors will be present for book signings along with a 20 percent discount on all purchases. Come to the AHS Auditorium at 949 E. Second St. All proceeds benefit AHD Publications Division. Call 628-5774 for more information.

Nutcracker Performances

It wouldn't be December without the traditional performance of the Nutcracker. This time, the Tucson Regional Ballet has put a local spin on the classic dance performance. A Southwest Nutcracker combines traditional dance with Tucson lifestyles in the 1880s. The show starts Friday at 7 p.m. and continues until Sunday. Performances are at Tucson Convention Center's Leo Rich Theatre. Tickets are available through TCC outlets and Dillard's. Calling 791-4266 can get you the skinny on the show.

Holiday Pop-Ska

Having just finished touring with the Bloodhound Gang, The Hippos stop in Tucson with the Aquabats on Friday, Dec. 17 at the Rialto Theater. The lead singer of the pop-ska band, Ariel Rechtshaid, describes the band's album as a "boy-meets-girl kind of record." For further information on concert times and ticket prices, call 740-0126.

Wintertime Bazaars

Club Congress keeps busy with several shows in the near future. This Friday the Holiday Bazaar features live music, holiday shopping, door prizes and a car show. Tickets are $5. On Friday, Dec. 17, Giant Sand and Interlocking Grip will perform for the same price. Sunday, Dec. 19, Sangre Del Sol and Havana perform for free; and Friday Dec. 24, celebrate Christmas Eve with Pork Torta and the Last of the Juanitas for only $3. Call 622-8848 for show times.

A Yuletide Mystery

Keep that holiday cheer in check with the Arizona Theatre Company's performance "The Mystery of Irma Vep." The show runs through Saturday, Dec. 18 at the Alice Holsclaw Theatre in Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave., with ticket prices ranging from $20 - $32. It's no mystery that 884-8210 has all the answers.

Religious Offerings

For a more religious approach to the holiday season, The Borderlands Theater in conjunction with Pima Community College Center for the Arts presents "A Tucson Pastorela" through Sunday, Dec. 19 at Black Box Theater, 2202 W. New Year's Rock

Ring in the New Year with Crawdaddyo and other artists at the Club Congress New Year's Eve bash at 8 p.m., Saturday Dec. 31. The traditional champagne toast starts at midnight followed by early morning coffee and pastries. Tickets are $45 and partygoers must be of legal drinking age. Call 622-8848 for festive information.

An Exciting Exhibition

Artist Gonzalo Espinosa captures passion and torment in his autobiographical exhibition entitled Caprichos del Cuerpo (Whims of the Body) displayed through Sunday, Jan. 1. The exhibit is at Raices/Taller 222, 222 E. Sixth St. Call 792-9619 for more information.

Native American Life

Varying aspects of Native American life have been captured in Edward S. Curtis' The North American Indian photography exhibit. The show runs through Thursday, Jan. 5 at Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 624-7370 for more information.

Photographic Exhibits

Several photography exhibits will also be running over the vacation including Christopher Burkett's Intimations of Paradise and Nancy Tokar Miller's Realms of Light. The work of both artists will be at the Etherton Gallery, 135 S. 6th St. through Sunday, Jan. 8.

Adoplh Gottlieb

The Tucson Museum of Art has revived the work of one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. Adolph Gottlieb and the West will be featured through Monday, Jan. 9 at the museum at 140 N. Main Ave. Arts aficionados call 624-2333.

Part Human

Artist Pasqualina Azzarello and sculptor Deb Fisher explore the make up of a human in their exhibit Part Human. Featured at the RAW Gallery, 43 S. Sixth Ave., these two artists strive to portray the actions, abilities and desires of humans. The works of both artists will be displayed through Sunday, Jan 15. Call 882-6927 for details.
