Tate Williams says the biggest challenge of stepping up as editor in chief of the Arizona Daily Wildcat will be adjusting to being responsible for the entire newspaper staff.

"As far as the paper goes, dealing with the layout and packaging will also be a challenge," said Williams, a journalism and English senior. "Layout is something I don't have much experience in, so I am a little nervous, but it's a more creative part of the job that I would like to explore and improve."

Williams began his career at the Wildcat in January as a news reporter, and took over the job of news editor in May. He was appointed editor in chief Friday after being interviewed by 10 members of the Arizona Student Media Board.

"Even though he was the only candidate for the position, the board felt comfortable in choosing Tate for the job," said Mark Woodhams, director of Arizona Student Media.

"Tate has been working hard for the past year and has earned the respect of all the staff. I expect him to be a successful editor," Woodhams said.

Current editor in chief David Cieslak, a journalism junior, is confident that Williams will do a great job.

"Tate is a very talented journalist and one of the best people I know," Cieslak said.

Cieslak - who has been working on the Wildcat for two years - said the hardest part of leaving his job will be the staff he has worked with.

"Getting together with such great people on a daily basis had made the job so much more enjoyable than I expected, and I will miss them a great deal," he said.

As editor in chief, Williams' job is overseeing the final product of the newspaper, which includes making all editorial decisions, managing the individual desks and writing editorials.

"For the most part, the majority of the paper will stay the same but I am always hoping to improve the quality and originality of articles," Williams said.

Williams is also hoping to increase the capabilities of the Wildcat Online and explore the possibilities of improvement.

"I am looking forward to hearing people talk about the Wildcat and see a strong community reaction," Williams said.

Williams said he is thrilled about stepping up as editor in chief for the spring semester.

"I absolutely adore working for the Wildcat. I have always liked the paper since I began school here and the idea of running it is exciting as hell," he said.
