AHSC Bone Marrow Transplant Program reaches a landmark

The highly successful Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the Arizona Health Sciences Center last month performed a transplant on its 1,000th patient, a Phoenix police officer who was released last week.

This procedure, which removed bone marrow from a donor and transplanted it into Phoenix police officer Joshua Fradette, was performed by Dr. Elliot Epner.

Fradette, who turned 29 three days after the transplant, was amazed by the expediency of the procedure. "I had a couple of birthday presents and a few Christmas presents all wrapped into one," Fradette said. "A lot of people have to wait longer. I really lucked out."

Dr. Alan List, medical director of the program, said "this is an important milestone for the Bone Marrow Transplant Program."

"The breadth of experience accumulated with these efforts makes this the most successful program in the southwest," List added.
