Persona 2000 changes staff, policy and its entire format
Pull out that dusty journal and develop those three rolls of film from last summer's vacation; Persona magazine is on the hunt for student submissions. Persona, University of Arizona's annual undergraduate literature and arts magazine, is a compilation of student-created poetry, prose, photography and artwork. "Persona is like the doorstep for student submissions," said John Clinebell, a Media Arts graduate. "We want this to be something we can all be proud of." Several major changes make Persona 2000 an exciting challenge for this year's staff. The magazine is now accepting multimedia submissions like original video, film and even interactive CD-ROM. Since this type of submission cannot be portrayed on paper, the artist will be asked to publish several still frames or submit a synopsis of the work. At Persona's end of the year reading, computers and televisions will be available for multimedia viewing purposes. Persona 2000 is also taking a dramatically different approach to staff organization. Rather than a hierarchical system, the club decided to split editorial responsibility between five co-editors: English and creative writing seniors Annie Holub and Kellie Rife, junior Margaret Adcock, and bcfanthropolgy junior Amalia Hernandez and Clinebell. The graphical element of the magazine has undergone a significant change as well. Persona 1999 compiled a writing and artistic pieces on the same page, often misleading the reader. This year, the staff intends to pay homage to each submitter by placing individual pieces on separate pages. "The graphic design concept is a more direct representation of art and literary work," said Clinebell. "Showcasing it as individual art shows respect for the individual artist." Persona has won the Associated Writing Program's National Writing Program Director's prize for Undergraduate Literary Magazines twice. The magazine also boasts awards in both content and page design.
