The University of Arizona men's club volleyball team started the year off facing the best, and this weekend the team will challenge the rest.

Arizona finished seventh overall among NCAA Division I, II and III teams in its season opening UC-Santa Barbara tournament at the beginning of the month. Tomorrow, the team will test its competition at the University of Michigan in a club tournament.

"I have a good feeling for this weekend," UA head coach Steve Carlat said. "We competed with top NCAA teams with a very young group."

The team finished at the top of the club teams in the UCSB competition, with victories over Sacramento State and No. 19 California State at Northridge. The Wildcats also had lengthy matches against fourth-ranked Pepperdine University and No. 15 UCSB.

"We played for a considerable time for a match," Carlat said of the Wildcats' matches against Pepperdine and UCSB, which lasted two hours and 10 minutes, and three hours and 15 minutes, respectively.

"It was a great match and a sad loss," he added of the UCSB meeting.

The Wildcats, finished undefeated last year with a 31-0 club record and 33-4 overall, also begin this season in the No. 1 slot.

"We're excited to play another team because it's been a while, and this will be a good measuring stick to see where we're at in the club level," said setter Steve Walker, a graduate student. "We're pretty fired up."

Arizona's opponents in this weekend's tournament have yet to be determined.
