Editorial denies God

Talk about this story

To the editor,

Kudos to the Opinions Board of The Daily Wildcat for pushing the discussion between Christians and Mormons to the heart of the matter for the rest of the readers. Only, they err in coming to the conclusion that a plethora of ideas concerning religion prove that "religion is in fact defined on an individual basis." Dissension does not prove that there is no real answer. It only proves that there are still those who believe in truth and are willing to seek and stand up for it.

The conclusion to which the Opinions Board has come to is a subtle denial of the existence of God. If God does not exist, the Opinions Board of The Daily Wildcat is correct in saying, "no faith can truly be misrepresented because religion is defined on an individual basis." Though, if God does exist, then who or what God is not determined by us. What constitutes true religion is how perfectly it corresponds to the reality of who and what God is.

The only way such an editorial can be accepted is when a society has deemed that the only reality is that which is defined by the physical world: only matter and energy exist. If naturalism is true, then religion is merely a societal phenomenon that we must harness and tailor to our own benefit, both public and private. Further, to say that any individual's particular religion is right or wrong is akin to judging their taste in food. It would not only be mean-spirited, but also incredibly arrogant. Although, if there really is more than just the physical, if there is a spiritual reality, i.e., spiritual truth, then God is one way or another. God, or gods, cannot be a host of contradicting attributes.

Jesus had a lot to say about this discussion. Here are just a few choice quotes: (John 4:23) "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." (John 18:37) "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." (John 14:6) "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."
