Ex-sorority member bitter

Talk about this story

To the editor,

I am writing in response to Katie Fischer's bitter letter in the 1/31/00 edition of The Daily Wildcat. Being an active member of the UA Greek community, I was shocked to see such bitter words thrown towards Alpha Chi Omega. Yes, many accusations have come against this organization, yet the strides that Alpha Chi Omega have taken to overcome them cannot be ignored. I certainly do not agree nor condone the accusations and/or confessions of "funding fraud" and "belittling hazing practices." However, this sorority has come back full force and strengthened their program 100%. Anyone walking around this campus can see the shower of A Chi-O pamphlets and posters, declaring their "Celebration Series," boasting an impressive list of guest speakers and programs. Alpha Chi Omega is very strong nationally and has worked hard to have women from neighboring chapters come and help them out, seeing as they have so few remaining members. I, for one, would like to congratulate this organization on their staying power and the full turnaround that they have made on this campus. Katie Fischer is not looking for an apology to this campus, she is looking for one for herself. She claims outrage at the school for allowing Alpha Chi Omega to remain on campus. However, after all the hard work done, I feel that second chances are in order. Ms. Fischer's words seem to come out of personal bitterness and hatred over funds lost and embarrassment; an understandable complaint. However, if she cannot recognize that this organization is out to recreate their image and make a positive difference, perhaps it is better that she is no longer a UA Greek woman.
