Soccer denied first-ever victory over Arizona State

By Chris Martin
Arizona Daily Wildcat, September 2, 1999

With a treacherous rain storm looming and vibrant lightning on the horizon, the UA women's soccer team began a very physical game with Arizona State University in their home opener, Tuesday night.

The game lasted only three minutes and 55 seconds before the skies opened up and delayed the game for nearly two hours.

When the teams returned to the rain soaked field to finish the contest, the Wildcats (1-1-0 overall, 0-1-0 in Pacific 10 Conference) seemed to have lost their edge and as a result, lost the game 4-0 to the Sun Devils (1-0-0).

"It was very disappointing," sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Monti said. "The rain delay unfortunately had it's hindrance."

Poor field conditions and a combined 21 fouls lead to sloppy play by both teams. ASU was able to grab a quick lead though, as defender Jill Rivard and forward Holly Cohen were able to find the back of the net, less than 20 minutes into the match.

"We weren't the team we originally were," UA head coach Lisa Fraser said.

Things got worse for the Wildcats as ASU All-American midfielder Stacey Tullock, showcased her skills by slotting a goal just six minutes into the second half.

Antoinette Marjanovic then sealed the game as she was able to put a shot past Monti in the 63rd minute.

"We came out hard and pumped," sophomore forward Kim McGehee said, "You win some, you lose some, and unfortunately we lost."

ASU took advantage of their size and strength up the middle to force the Wildcats to play a defensive-minded game and were able to outshoot UA 11-5.

UA was able to muster little offense against the stellar play of ASU goalkeeper Erin Reinke, who recorded her first shutout of the year.

"It's disappointing, we have a good team this year," freshman defender Tatiana Robertson said. "But we have a lot of games ahead."

Fraser agreed with Robertson's sentiments.

"It's disappointing. I don't think they are a 4-0 team better than us," she said.

UA was lead offensively by junior forward Chrissy Sanford and sophomore midfielder Marisa Padula, who had three shots a piece respectively. Junior midfielder Brooke McManus and sophomore defender Erin Nelson, also let go on two shots each.

UA looks to bounce from Tuesday night's loss this weekend when they take on University of New Mexico on Sunday at Murphey Field.
