Just another theory
To the editor, One of the things I'll miss about the UA is the daily aneurysm I get when reading the "Perspectives" page of the Wildcat. Everyday, the editorial pages have articles whose authors are both ignorant and arrogant in their opinions. Sheila Bapat's sophomoric "Let there be evolution," for example, doesn't even attempt to be reasonable in its criticism of Karen Johnson. She writes, "As much as Johnson and her supporters would like to build a steeple over the state capital and hold daily prayers ... " This juvenile exaggeration serves no purpose except to highlight Bapat's lack of wit and ignorance of the issue. Again she writes, " ... it (evolution theory) has existed for nearly 150 years and has yet to be disproved." Apparently, when Bapat talks of "quality science education" she missed out herself, as evolution hasn't been disproved or proved, which is why it is a theory. Indeed, Bapat's "quality science education" is most likely the reason for her ignorance of the issue. Most students are taught, or at least take it for granted, that evolution is true. The truth is that while the evidence might lean towards evolution, we don't know either way, so why not teach what the scientific evidence shows, both for and against evolution, and let the students make up their mind. This is all Karen Johnson is asking for in her bill. But I'm sure Bapat, like other Wildcat writers, didn't think any of this through. It is not so much that I disagree with Bapat, I just want some intelligent criticism, for once. I say fire the little boys and girls who choose to speak without thinking, and hire some real writers who will treat important issues with the intelligence and respect your readers deserve.
