UA women in first place in tournament

Behind three strong individual outings, the top-ranked University of Arizona women's golf squad finished atop the leaderboard place after the first round of play at the TRW Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.

The Wildcats shot an opening day 4-over-par 288.

Arizona was led by sophomore Cristina Baena, who carded a 3-under-par 68 to tie Tulsa University's Stacy Prammanasudh for the lead.

Senior Jill Gomric is in fourth after shooting even par at the par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.

Junior Christina Monteiro shot a 72 to tie for fifth place.

Freshman Julia Kraschinski (6-over-par 77) and junior Jenna Daniels (9-over-par 80) are tied for 40th and 69th, respectively.

Day two of the three-day tournament resumes today in Palos Verdes.
