Talk about this story

Police arrested a UA student Monday after UA Parking and Transportation Services notified UAPD when the student tried to remove the boot that was on his car, police reports stated.

The student's vehicle was immobilized with a tire boot after Parking and Transportation Services noticed he was using a Zone One parking permit that was reported stolen.

The student went to the Parking and Transportation Services building, 888 N. Euclid Ave., at about 2:24 p.m. and police arrived soon after to speak with the man, later identified as Jason Gallinger, 18, of Hopi Residence Hall, 1440 E. Fourth St.

The officer told Gallinger he was investigating a criminal case and read the student his Miranda rights.

Gallinger told police he was in front of his residence hall when a man walked by and said "Hey look! A Zone One pass!" and continued walking, reports stated.

He said he then picked up the pass and used it in his Toyota pickup, reports stated.

The officer asked Gallinger if he would object to taking fingerprints from the vehicle the permit was reported stolen from and Gallinger replied that it was OK because he didn't steal the permit, reports stated.

The officer asked him if he had seen the white pickup the permit was stolen from and Gallinger admitted to stealing the permit, reports stated.

He told police "I know... I did it... I screwed up," reports stated.

Gallinger was cited on suspicion of third degree burglary and booked into Pima County Jail.

The UAPD requested a UA student be placed in the Dean of Students Diversion Program Monday after a security officer witnessed the student stealing candy from a campus vending machine, reports stated.

The security officer was in his car at about 11:46 p.m. near the Veterinary Sciences building, 1117 E. Lowell St., when he saw a man breaking a piece of a concrete parking barrier on the sidewalk.

The officer was stepping out of his car to stop him from damaging the sidewalk when the man went into a vending ramada with the piece of concrete, reports stated.

The security officer told police he heard a sound like the man was using the piece of concrete to hit a vending machine, so he called UAPD dispatch, reports stated.

When police arrived, an officer saw a man, later identified as Allen Whitt, 19, of Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall, 910 E. Fifth St., with three Reese's Peanut Butter Cups packages, a package of Reese's Pieces Candies and a Reese's NutRageous candy bar in his hands.

Whitt said he put $2 in a vending machine, and it didn't give him the candy so he kicked the machine.

He said he knew he got more candy than he paid for, but he took it because he thought someone else might, reports stated.

The officer requested he be placed in the diversion program in lieu of theft charges.

There was no damage to any of the vending machines, so Whitt was not cited.

A university employee called UAPD Monday after someone stole $2 in quarters from a teachers' lounge in a UA building, reports stated.

Another employee saw the man in lounge the Center for English as a Second Language, 1100 E. North Campus Dr., at about 3:25 p.m. fumbling with quarters.

She didn't realize the man was stealing from the coffee fund can until he ran from the building.

She didn't get a good enough look at the man to make a composite sketch.

A UA student contacted police Monday after someone stole his bag from a locker in a UA building, reports stated.

The man said he left his bag in a locker at the College of Medicine, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., at about 9 p.m. Saturday.

A janitor in the building found the locker unlocked, open and empty at about 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Along with the bag valued at an estimated $45, the man's stethoscope valued at an estimated $117, his Bubinksi hammer valued at an estimated $8, his tuning fork valued at an estimated $5, his College of Medicine identification card and his University Medical Center identification card were stolen.
