Students claim stolen bikes

photo

Darin Zumbrunnen reunited with an old friend Saturday morning at a Southside police station.

The pre-architecture freshman didn't bail anyone out, but reclaimed his stolen bicycle, which was recovered by the Tucson Police Department at a midtown house last month.

TPD invited the public to scan their collection of about 450 recovered stolen bicycles Saturday at the Tucson Police South Substation, 4410 S. Park Ave.

Steven Harn, TPD burglary detective, said among the "steady stream" of people searching through the piles of bicycles, about 40 identified and reclaimed their bikes. [Read article]

Softball: No. 2 Cats rebound with sweep

photo

Arizona softball head coach Mike Candrea was honored at Hillenbrand Stadium yesterday for reaching the 1,000 career victories mark March 13 against North Carolina State.

In his speech at the brief ceremony, Candrea didn't go back too far in the team's prestigious history to recall some significant wins that stick out to him.

"The best two victories we've had are these last two," he said with a smile.

Candrea got wins 1,012 and 1,013 over the weekend, sweeping Oregon (23-13, 3-4 Pacific 10 Conference) with a pair of 8-1 victories yesterday and Saturday. [Read article]

The spirit of religion
photo

As a young child who probably asked too many questions, I used to probe my mother about the metaphysical: "Which religion is the 'right' one?" "Do people from all religions go to heaven?" I always received the same reply: "Religion is made by man. It is your spirit that counts."

Many years later I learned what my mother meant. The value of religion does not lie in individual religious dogmas. Instead, the value of religion derives from the virtue that it seeks to build and from the spiritual development that it attempts to foster. [Read article]

After 30 years, the cult classic "The Rocky Horror Show" is still going strong: transvestites, aliens, hunchback and all. For the first time in Tucson history, the Arizona Repertory Theatre presents this legendary, interactive piece of theater.

Director Richard Hanson's experience with this musical dates back to its original showing with Tim Curry, which he saw in Los Angeles at The Roxy Theater. He has wanted to do the production for years, but this year all the pieces seemed to come together. [Read article]

Land surfing: Longboarders invade the UA

There's nothing new about skateboarding, but the elite few who ride them around Tucson are getting some competition from a new breed of riders.

Longboards, a kind of hybrid cross between a surfboard and a skateboard, have been making a comeback since the 1990s and are slowly, but surely becoming ever more visible on the UA campus.

Though most skateboarders tend to be linked into the high school age group, some veteran skateboarders now attend the UA and even partake of the longboard phenomenon. [Read article]
