Student killed in Thanksgiving weekend accident

Ren‚ Corella Pina, a 19-year-old mechanical engineering freshman, died late Nov. 23 while on his way home for the Thanksgiving weekend.

Services were held Nov. 28 for Pina, who was traveling with three friends, when a wheel came off of the car they were in outside of Hermosillo, Sonora. The vehicle began tumbling, knocking Pina out of the car.

Another University of Arizona student, Francisco Leyva, a chemical engineering senior, was also in the car and is recovering from a broken shoulder in Mexico. The other passengers suffered minor injuries.

Pina had just started work in the Center for English as a Second Language at the UA.

Elizabeth Templin, assistant director for CESL, said, "We were all very saddened. He was going to help our students, and we pick our students very carefully for that position."

Pina is survived by his parents, Ren‚ Corella Barrera and Martha Beatrice Pina Martinez.
