Department cut is just the start

Editor:

The headline and editorial in the Oct. 27 Arizona Daily Wildcat suggests why the administration is so intent on eliminating the Journalism Department Ä in a nutshell, to silence the scrutinizing press including the daily college newspaper. Is this just the first salvo to stun critics ahead of time in the Administration's avowed assault on the tenure doctrine? Perhaps the faculty at the University of Arizona should view this skirmish not as merely a cost-cutting ploy but rather as an insidious attack on the First Amendment and academic freedom.
