CLUB HOCKEY

The Arizona club hockey team ran its season record to 5-0 with two wins against Colorado this weekend at the Tucson Convention Center.

In Saturday's finale, the Icecats skated an almost flawless first period, as the UA's Kevin Oztekin and Greg Mitchell both had goals. The period ended with a 2-0 Icecat advantage.

In a second period, which was marred by excessive penalty minutes by both teams, the Icecats matched the Buffaloes with every movement up and down the ice.

Chris Noga scored the only Arizona goal of the period with just over 8:00 left. The Buffaloes scored their only goal of the game with 21 seconds left in the period.

Sam Battaglia scored :18 into the third to give the Icecats a 4-1 lead.

Jon Muntz's goal provided the final 5-1 margin, on what was the nicest play of the game.

CLUB SOCCER

The Arizona men's club soccer team advanced out of the Western Region with a 3-2 victory over Weber State in Las Vegas Saturday.

The UA's victory places them as the No. 1 seed going into the nationals in two weeks. Arizona entered the regionals with a 19-2-1 record under Coach Ron Fox. Arizona defeated New Mexico State, Utah State and Long Beach State on their way to a rematch with Weber State in the finals of the Western Regionals.

Arizona arrived in Las Vegas Thursday and promptly disposed of New Mexico State 2-0. The Wildcats faced Weber State in the first of two games Friday and lost in a close 2-1 defeat. Arizona rebounded in the afternoon by blasting Long Beach State 8-2. Utah State lost to the Wildcats in the semifinals 4-1.

The final was a classic showdown between Arizona and Weber State, the only team to defeat the Wildcats in the tournament.

Three teams from the Western Region will advance to the Nationals. Arizona, Weber State and UTEP will compete against 13 other schools for the National Club Championship from Nov. 17-19 in Phoenix.
