UA women out of tourney

The Arizona women's tennis team's top doubles team of Angela Bernal and Stephanie Sammaritano was knocked out in the third round of the National Clay Court Championships in Jackson, Miss., Friday.

Bernal and Sammaritano, who are ranked 19th in the nation, went down to the Texas team of Lucie Ludvigova and Kelly Pace in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Ludvigova and Pace were seeded fourth in the tournament, with Ludvigova also being the preseason No. 1 singles player in the country.

Arizona will take a week off before the ASU Invita-tional, which is Oct. 10-16.

Jan Anderson, the Arizona men's tennis team's No. 1 singles player, has moved on to the finals of the SkyTel National Clay Court Championship in Jackson.

Anderson had to battle back after being down a set to defeat Florida's Damon Henkel, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in his semifinal match. The victory let Anderson move on to the tournament championship match, which was held yesterday at 9:30 a.m. local time. When the Wildcat went to press, results were unavailable.

At the Stanford Invitational (cross country), the Arizona men's team won the meet behind first and fourth place finishes by brothers Martin and Bob Keino, respectively.

The women's team placed fourth. Suzanne Castruita finished second behind UCLA's Karen Recos. Arizona's Viola Schaffer came in sixth.
