Phoenix releases Mustaf

The Associated Press

PHOENIX Ä The Phoenix Suns waived veteran forward Jerrod Mustaf on Thursday, apparently clearing the way for them to sign unrestricted free agent Wayman Tisdale.

The Suns also announced that rookie forward Antonio Lang has signed a three-year contract. No financial details were disclosed, however.

Mustaf, 24, had two years remaining on a three-year, $5 contract extension he signed with the Suns on June 11, 1992. He was obtained in a trade that sent Xavier McDaniel to the New York Knicks on Oct. 1, 1991.

The Suns said they have agreed to buy out the remaining two years on Mustaf's contract Ä about $3.8 million Ä and give him his unconditional release.

If Mustaf is picked up on waivers by any other NBA team by noon Monday, that club would assume his current contract, valued at $1.7 million this season.

The subtraction of Mustaf from Phoenix's roster opens an $850,000 salary slot and the Suns may use it soon to sign Tisdale.
