The Arizona Board of Regents meeting beginning today will include a vote on a mission statement for Arizona's new four-year campus.
The board will vote on approval of a mission statement and guiding principles for the proposed University of Arizona-affiliated four-year campus to be located in Pima County. The mission statement contains six guiding principles, which include a focus on community service and awareness of the "global society."
Provost Paul Sypherd said the next step for the new campus is to hire a president or director for the campus. Sypherd said he stressed the new campus would not be a "little UA."
Up for discussion during today's meeting is a set of guidelines that would link faculty teaching efforts to the improvement of undergraduate education. The discussion is based on two faculty workload studies presented to the board in October 1992.
The guidelines' goals include having every student entering the UA with a faculty mentor by 1996 and having every student complete an academic plan. The guidelines also address how undergraduates can become more involved in research and how technology can be improved over the next five years.
There will also be a discussion of what the three Arizona universities have done in the past two years to deter campus crime. The board will also vote on whether 12,949 square feet of land located at the northwest corner of North Tucson Boulevard and East Fort Lowell Road can be auctioned.
In addition, the board will consider proposals to create a doctoral minor in global change and a master of science and a doctorate in environmental engineering.
The meeting starts at 1:45 p.m. in the Rincon Room in the Student Union. The public is welcome to attend.
