Four UA employees received the Copper Letter award presented Friday at the 1995 Minority Achievement Program graduation.

The program aims to get minority employees to strive for leadership roles and greater achievements at work. Winners are chosen based on community outreach, change in outlook after the program and contributions in the workplace.

Awarded were Jim Lucas, Irene Sobey, Monica DeSoto, and Lupita Loftus.

"In my culture, we are very quiet, but sometimes you need to speak your mind," Sobey said. "MAP has done a lot for my self-esteem . I have to say 'thank you' to MAP because that is how I got so involved with the community and why I went back to school."

Twenty-two UA employees received diplomas for their participation in the week-long MAP program. MAP has graduated 328 UA employees since its inception in 1989, one-fourth of the targeted group.
