'Ace' sequel brings home $38 million

LOS ANGELES Ÿ Jim Carrey's ''Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls'' enjoyed the best non-summer opening in Hollywood history, collecting $37.8 million in its debut weekend.
The opening was the sixth largest ever, and the year's second strongest premiere. The all-time record was set in June by ''Batman Forever,'' which made $52.8 million in its first weekend.
The top five movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by studio, gross, number of theater locations, receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.:
1. ''Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls,'' Warner Bros., $37.8 million, 2,652 locations, $14,255 per location, $37.8 million, one week.
2. ''Get Shorty,'' MGM, $7.6 million, 2,013 locations, $3,614 per location, $50.6 million, four weeks.
3. ''Copycat,'' Warner Bros., $4.8 million, 1,661 locations, $2,557 per location, $19.4 million, three weeks.
4. ''Powder,'' Disney, $4.1 million, 1,621 locations, $2,557 per location, $21.5 million, three weeks.
5. ''Home for the Holidays,'' Paramount, $3.3 million, 1,000 locations, $3,345 per location, $8.5 million, two weeks.
