Physics professor on road to recovery after car accident

UA physics Professor Peter Carruthers is recuperating at Southern Arizona Rehabilitation Hospital following a car accident Sept. 19.
Daniel Stein, Physics Department head, said he visited Carruthers routinely since the accident.
"He has been steadily improving, but this was a very bad accident," Stein said. "He has a long haul in front of him."
Carruthers' wife, Lucy, said he is making progress and may be discharged from the hospital Friday, Dec. 8. She said it would be "good to have him home for the holidays."
Doctors have advised Carruthers be moved to another hospital instead of going home, but his wife said the family will determine their next move after his discharge from the rehabilitation center.
Carruthers was injured after his Toyota Land Cruiser rolled over one and a half times on North Campbell Avenue just north of East River Road. UMC doctors then performed surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.
Before the accident, Carruthers was teaching graduate-level classes in physics. He served as head of the Physics Department for six years, until 1992.
Carruthers will not be returning to full-time teaching next semester. Lucy said it is too premature to make any decisions regarding exactly when he will return and in what capacity he would serve the university.
