Golf team places 7th in Dallas tournament

The Arizona men's golf team shot a third-round score of 292, good enough to be tied for seventh place at the Taylor Made Red River Classic, played at the Dallas Athletic Club course.

Team rounds of 292-282-292 had the Wildcats in a tie with South Carolina and Houston. Texas was leading the tournament by eight strokes over defending NCAA champion Oklahoma State.

Arizona was ahead of Pacific 10 Conference rival Southern Cal, which was in 13th place. Arizona State, which was second in the tournament, led Pac-10 teams with a score of 865 after three rounds.

Individually, the Wildcats had four players in the top 50. Gary Matthews led with rounds of 74-67-73 for a 214 and was tied for 10th. Matt Bergstrom was tied for 22nd, while Ted Purdy and Rory Sabbatini were both tied for 38th place. Junior varsity player Jim Zadvorny was in 64th place playing as an individual. Freshman Andy Barnes was tied for 70th.
