Men's golf in 1st after two rounds

The Arizona men's golf team went from third to first after shooting a score of 292 Monday in the second round of the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala. The Wildcats were in third place Sunday with a round of 297, but with their Monday score and an overall total of 589, the team moved three strokes ahead of second-place Nevada-Las Vegas.

Arizona State and Florida both followed at 593. The Wildcats' second round score was the best so far in the tournament.

Individually, Rob Bradley of North Carolina leads with rounds of 65 and 74 for a five-under-par 139. Arizona golfers Matt Bergstrom and Ted Purdy are tied for fourth place with cumulative scores of 146. Todd Rose is tied for 16th at 150 and Rory Sabbatini and Andy Barnes round out the team with scores of 151 and 154, respectively.

Last week Arizona finished up the Taylor Made Red River Classic in Dallas tied for seventh. The Wildcats shot rounds of 292-282-292 for an 870 in the tournament, finishing in a tie with South Carolina and Houston. Arizona's best individual finisher was Gary Matthews, who finished in a five-way tie for 10th.
