Men's golf finishes 4th

The Arizona men's golf team had the lead at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate entering Tuesday's final round, but a team score of 300 doomed the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish.

Arizona State trailed Arizona by four strokes entering the final round, but the Sun Devils fired a tournament-best score of 289 Tuesday and a total of 882 to win the 54-hole tournament, held at the Shoal Creek

Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala.

Nevada-Las Vegas finished second with an 887, while Oklahoma State was a shot back at 888. Arizona, Florida and North Carolina all shot 889.

Individually, Ted Purdy led the Wildcats with a 3 over par 219, tying Auburn's Jay Hobby for fourth place. Matt Bergstrom shot 223 to tie for 12th, Todd Rose and Rory Sabbatini both shot 227 to tie for 30th and Andy Barnes finished in a tie for 35th at 228.

Rob Bradley of North Carolina won the individual title with a 6 under par 210.
