Maes wins 3 matches before falling in semis

Vicky Maes advanced to the semifinals of the T. Rowe Price Court Championships last weekend, but was defeated soundly Kansas' Kylie Hunt soon afterward.

The tournament ran Sept. 26 through Sunday in Baltimore.

The UA women's tennis team sent four players to the tournament, including Maes, Betsy Miringoff and juniors Khristen Pietrucha and Stephanie Sammaritano.

Sammaritano joined Maes in advancing to the main draw of the tournament.

The road to the semis for Maes began when she defeated Tina Samara of Georgia in the first round 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. Maes then went on to defeat Miria Wallmark of Utah 6-2, 7-5 in the second round.

In the third round, Maes downed Marianne Vallin of UNLV in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. But in the semifinals Maes was defeated by Kylie Hunt of Kansas. Hunt beat Maes in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

In her first match, Sammaritano was able to advance by defeating Alison Cohen of Virginia 7-5, 6-7, 7-5.

However, in the second round, Sammaritano lost to Tzipora Obziler of Old Dominion.

Arizona next plays Oct. 13-15 at the ASU Invitational in Tempe.
