Tradition meaningless

Editor:

Tradition is not a good enough reason to maintain status quo. Just to remind you of a few past American "traditions";

˜ African Americans were slaves

˜ Women did not have the right to vote

˜ People did not choose a spouse ... the parents did

˜ People were shot on sight for stealing cattle

˜ Justice was a hangman's noose, or a lynch mob

˜ Duels were fought for slander, etc.

These are just a few of the past "traditions" of our culture. Just because something is tradition, does not make it right. I do not believe Shannon should have tried to get in the Citadel, either. However, only because she wasn't qualified, not because it is a tradition.

A letter in Time had it right ... "There are a lot of males in the Citadel, but no men."
