Honors students no different from others

Editor:

I am an honors student and was angered by the comments made by the students in the article entitled "RHA considering third honors hall." The two students quoted in the article expressed attitudes that are biased against honors students.

Rob DeVore was quoted as saying, "There is a lot of socializing. If they make it an honors dorm, they would stay inside and study or something." Granted, my social life may not be as exciting as Mr. DeVore's, but I do have one. The majority of honors students do not lock themselves up in their dorm rooms and study all the time; they are on the whole normal students who balance their time between studying and socializing.

The other comment was made by Jason Yu, who said "I don't think the new honors hall should be here. This is like a playground. They should be by the library." Would Mr. Yu be pleased if RHA just pitched a few tents inside the library and moved the honors students in there? Let's be reasonable Ÿ there are seventeen dorms on campus. The honors college is only asking for three. That would leave fourteen dorms for non-honors students and honors students who choose not to live in an honors setting. Is that too much to ask?

The most important point I am trying to make, which I felt was not made in the article, is that honors students are, on the whole, normal. We have lives and behave much like the average University of Arizona student. Perhaps, before making comments, people should become more informed about the behavior and lives of a group.
