Primary election

The polls will be open today from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the City of Tucson's primary election. City residents who registered to vote by Aug. 21 are eligible to vote.

City officials are expecting a 22 percent voter turnout. The Democratic candidates for November's general election will be chosen for mayor, Ward 1 and Ward 4. The Republicans have a primary in Ward 4.

Polling location information can be obtained by calling city elections at 791-2522 or 791-4213.

New fraternity

Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity will be holding an informational meeting today at 6:30 p.m. in Student Union Room 283.

The fraternity is starting a new chapter at the University of Arizona, though it was on campus from 1951 to 1963.

They were invited to return by the Interfraternity Council and the Greek Life Office.

Last day

Tomorrow is the last day to drop using RSVP. An instructor's signature is required for dropping classes after tomorrow.

Classes dropped by tomorrow will be deleted from the student's transcript.

Volunteers needed

The Tucson Centers for Women and Children need volunteers to help provide services to survivors of domestic violence.

People are needed to do everything from child care to crisis line to running errands like grocery shopping.

Poetry reading

The College of Humanities presents a bilingual poetry reading and discussion led by graduate student Hector Contreras in Student Union Room 285 today at 12:30 p.m.

Contreras will read from "Memory of the Stone: Poems and Commentaries."

This is presented as part of the Colt Colloquium Series.

Humanities workshop

The Arizona Humanities Council hosts a public workshop at the Arizona Historical Society auditorium today at 11 a.m.

The workshop will discuss the AHC's Program Guidelines, the Resource Center, the scholar's role, recent news from Congress about the status of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the new AHC homepage on the Internet called "Arizona Humanities Online."
